Like many of the great, family-owned, food
companies in America, Joey D's entry into the business of bottling
salad dressings began with a restaurant. This restaurant, Gourmet
Gourmet in Tarzana, California, was known for serving the "perfect
Chinese Chicken Salad". It was so good that it became a California
sensation. Customers picked up baskets of food to take to the Hollywood
Bowl, the Greek Theater, Dodger games, for parties and picnics.
It wasn't unusual to see a line of limousines in front of the place
on any given night.
Many customers would beg or bribe the wait staff for "just
a little dressing to take home". For a while, those requests
were met by filling empty wine bottles to satisfy the requests of
the customers.
Debbie Fields, of Mrs. Fields Cookies fame, tried the Original
Chinese Chicken Salad Dressing one day in the restaurant and
loved it so much that she asked the owners of Joey D's if they could
make a special version of the dressing for her chain of cafes, La
Petit Boulangerie. Thus was born the Creamy Chinese Chicken Salad
Dressing.
More dressings, such as Pasta
Salad Dressing, were added to the restaurant line and the requests
for bottles of dressing continued to increase until, one day in
1986, a decision to enter into production was made, and the fame
of Joey D's began to spread ever wider. Dole Food Products eventually included Joey D's dressing
in their pre-packaged salads, a line that sells over 25 million
units per year.
A brand new entry (7/01) "All Natural Oriental Ginger Dressing"
will sparkle, in the natural food stores especially, across the country.
It is wonderful with everything!
Still owned and operated by John and Connie Spear, Joey D's gets
requests now from all over the world, from folks who have tried
their dressings and want to serve them at home.
To start the new millennium,
Costco and Smart & Final requested that we make Club Size Original
World Famous Chinese Chicken Salad Dressing for their customers.
